When it comes to gourmet markets<\/strong>, everyone obviously thinks of the popular Mercado San Miguel<\/strong>. Except that every expatriate will tell you to avoid this place. Sure, the building is splendid, but it’s not the best place to eat. Here’s a list of our<\/strong> favorite \u00ab\u00a0mercados<\/strong>\u00ab\u00a0, food markets in Madrid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The great thing about this list is that these markets are to be found in virtually every district of Madrid<\/strong>, so you’re bound to find one within easy reach during your visit. And if not, it’s very easy to get around by public transport to the mercado you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1- Food markets in Madrid : Mercado San Ildelfonso<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I’ll start with my favorite: the Mercado San Ildelfonso.<\/strong> The Mercado de San Ildelfonso<\/strong> is located in the Malasa\u00f1a district.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why do I love him so much? Firstly, because the place is so beautiful: a mix of industrial and modern styles, with a warm atmosphere. The hustle and bustle of the kitchens creates a very special atmosphere. You can order food from the stands and sit down in the various seating areas: covered terrace, bar tables overlooking the street, indoor terrace with large tables. You can even bring the kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An elevator makes it possible to take a stroller up to the upper floors, but the traffic can be a bit tedious. In that case, get there early, before the 14h\/15h rush hour.<\/p>\n\n\n

On the other hand, it’s not the cheapest place. This market in one of Madrid’s hipster districts is a little overpriced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2- Mercado San Anton<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Located in the Chueca district,<\/strong> this market is totally different from the previous one. First of all, its size. The Mercado San<\/strong> Anton is huge, and looks like a shopping mall with its escalators. On the 1st floor, you’ll find a number of stalls selling fresh produce that are sure to tempt you. You’ll even find good cheese dairies with French products.<\/p>\n\n\n

The upper floors are catering areas. Rows of stalls in different styles offer a variety of dishes. You’ll need to order your food and take a seat in the areas provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the top floor, there’s a terrace, with no view but pleasant in summer. A bar and a lounge area welcome you in a very pleasant setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3- Food markets : Mercado de la Cebada<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This market is located very close to the Latina metro<\/strong> station. This covered market may be less stylish, but it offers a warm ambience. Stopping off at a small stand for a solo coffee will restore your energy, as the welcome is so friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This gourmet market is very spacious. You can go there to do your shopping or take a seat at one of the food stalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4- Mercado Anton Martin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Located in the Parc Retiro district, this mercado is a great place to visit, with outdoor stalls in the Passage Dor\u00e9<\/strong>. Great to do in summer. You can also enter the covered market from this street. When you take a stroll through the neighboring streets, look up and you’ll see some lovely street-art murals on the colorful walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
