When it comes to gourmet markets, everyone obviously thinks of the popular Mercado San Miguel. Except that every expatriate will tell you to avoid this place. Sure, the building is splendid, but it’s not the best place to eat. Here’s a list of our favorite “mercados“, food markets in Madrid.
The great thing about this list is that these markets are to be found in virtually every district of Madrid, so you’re bound to find one within easy reach during your visit. And if not, it’s very easy to get around by public transport to the mercado you want.
1- Food markets in Madrid : Mercado San Ildelfonso
I’ll start with my favorite: the Mercado San Ildelfonso. The Mercado de San Ildelfonso is located in the Malasaña district.
Why do I love him so much? Firstly, because the place is so beautiful: a mix of industrial and modern styles, with a warm atmosphere. The hustle and bustle of the kitchens creates a very special atmosphere. You can order food from the stands and sit down in the various seating areas: covered terrace, bar tables overlooking the street, indoor terrace with large tables. You can even bring the kids.
An elevator makes it possible to take a stroller up to the upper floors, but the traffic can be a bit tedious. In that case, get there early, before the 14h/15h rush hour.
On the other hand, it’s not the cheapest place. This market in one of Madrid’s hipster districts is a little overpriced.
2- Mercado San Anton
Located in the Chueca district, this market is totally different from the previous one. First of all, its size. The Mercado San Anton is huge, and looks like a shopping mall with its escalators. On the 1st floor, you’ll find a number of stalls selling fresh produce that are sure to tempt you. You’ll even find good cheese dairies with French products.
The upper floors are catering areas. Rows of stalls in different styles offer a variety of dishes. You’ll need to order your food and take a seat in the areas provided.
On the top floor, there’s a terrace, with no view but pleasant in summer. A bar and a lounge area welcome you in a very pleasant setting.
3- Food markets : Mercado de la Cebada
This market is located very close to the Latina metro station. This covered market may be less stylish, but it offers a warm ambience. Stopping off at a small stand for a solo coffee will restore your energy, as the welcome is so friendly.
This gourmet market is very spacious. You can go there to do your shopping or take a seat at one of the food stalls.

4- Mercado Anton Martin
Located in the Parc Retiro district, this mercado is a great place to visit, with outdoor stalls in the Passage Doré. Great to do in summer. You can also enter the covered market from this street. When you take a stroll through the neighboring streets, look up and you’ll see some lovely street-art murals on the colorful walls.

5- Mercado San Fernando
Located in the Lavapies district, this gourmet market is similar to the Mercado San Anton. This municipal market was created just after the civil war. Old stalls, you can feel that the place is ancient. I loved this market for its family atmosphere and its store selling second-hand books by weight! If you’re just passing through, I recommend a stop at the pretty Carmen Bar , where you can enjoy a cup of coffee from inside the market or on the street-side terrace. A real favorite for the welcome and decor.
6- Madrid’s chicest Food market: Le platea
The concept of this gastronomic market is unique in Europe. Its location in the chic embassy district sets the tone: a trendy venue with live music too. The tapas are rather expensive, but the place is really pleasant. You can store in the stores near the entrance or go to the restaurant upstairs. The upstairs restaurant offers upscale service and refined dishes for a higher budget (expect to pay around €70 for a family of 4).
